Mike Burns Freestyle Frenzy

I met Mike about 12 years ago on my home beach, West Dennis on sunny Cape Cod. He and his then girlfriend were windsurfers visiting from Long Island. Mike and Chrissy were light wind freestyling on a long board. We started a conversation and soon became great friends. Mike and Chrissy and I traveled several years to Cape Hatteras. Both competed in a pro event I co-ran, King of the Cape. Mike was the east coast champion due to his crazy slew of freestyle moves. He has progressed to being one of the US’s top freestylers and later ran his own event on Long Island.

Each year Mike and his Long Island posse head to Bonaire for 2-3 weeks of freestyle and windsurf fun. Mike and Chrissy found Bonaire when I recommended the island for their honeymoon.

Youp Schmit joins the PWA Tour 2010

15 year old Youp Schmit, NB12, has reached the pinnacle of his young windsurf career as he prepares to enter his first Professional Windsurfing Association (PWA) European event. The event will be held in Fuerteventura July 27-August 2. Along with his team mates Taty Frans, Kiri Thode and Tonky Frans, Endro Finies is also making his PWA European debut. Youp at age 15 is the youngest competitor. Fuerteventure is best known for incredible winds and very challenging windsurf conditions. Youp has trained since last year for his entry into the Pro level in the PWA. When he last spoke to this roving reporter he felt he had reached a point in his career where he needed to push his skills to the limit. While he won his class in previous Pro Kids Events Youp realizes the PWA offers a greater challenge. He is excited to make his debut and hopes to let the windsurf world see a glimpse of his brilliance.

Freestyle Heaven…

I first heard of these guys whilst watching a Dasher video one cold winter night in 2000. I had dreams of sailing and it was as close to sailing as I could get.  I heard the “Bonaire Kids” were going to Tinho and Susie’s event, Calema so my event partner and I headed to Merritt Island to scout the team and invite them to our event, King of the Cape 2001. The rest is history ..here’s a peak at their talent. It’s mindblowing, actually.

Wicked Wind

Windguru (www.windguru.cz) and our local weather forecaster (www.meteo.an) were right on with the weather forecast. The winds have been great for our windsurf tourists. The ABK Clinic attendees are certainly having  a great time on the water. The next two weeks are easily two of the busiest weeks on island. If you can find some last minute airfare, call me at 800-219-0118. I have some killer last minute deals.  It’s 4.5-5.5 wind all the way.
