Sabal Palm are three lovely villas in  the upscale neighborhood of Belnem. These  lovely villas each have their own swimming pool and patio. There is a large living  area with a well equipped open air kitchen. Each villa has 3 bedrooms with air conditioning. There are 3 bathrooms making it perfect for 3 couples. Due to the proximity to Lac Bay (3 miles) I call these my windsurf villas.  Each house is equipped with CableTV and free wireless internet. The beach is a 2 min. car ride or 15 min walk. Lac Bay is a straight run into the wind. Book this villa with your windsurf specialist who windsurfs herself, ann@bonairecaribbean.com

Team Bonaire landed this past weekend in the Big Apple to attend the East Coast Windsurfing Festival. They are guests at the oceanfront home of Mr. and Mrs. Thom Herring in Long Island. Thom’s son Alex is an annual visitor to Bonaire. Alex is part of the Long Island Posse that arrives each February. Ann Phelan of Caribbean Wind & Sun Vacations organizes this annual group trip where over 50 windsurfers descend on Bonaire to experience their favorite windsurf venue. One of the group members, Mike Burns and his colleague Michael Alex are coordinating the East Coast Windsurfing Festival.  Michael is a long time visitor to Bonaire and the author of the famous Peconic Puffin Windsurf Blog.

Ezri Heymans, Frederik Quadvlieg, Fra Assiz and Caesar Finies are set to compete this weekend at the windsurf festival. Other Bonaire repeaters competing at the event include Jill and George Marr who hosted a grande BBQ to welcome Team Bonaire. Check out two websites with more information on Team Bonaire’s visit to NY.

Rose Inn – A Local Antillean Experience

June 1, 2009

Rose Inn

A group of friends and I dined on a recent Sat. at Rose Inn in the little town of Rincon. This popular Antillean owned and run spot is both the local watering hole and culture stop. Run by lovely Malfina and assisted by her wonderful son, Vernon AKA Nonchie, it’s serves the best local food around.  My friend Sharon organized the dinner requesting a family style meal with all the favorites.  Malfina served this amazing fish  (photo above thanks to Larry and Mary) prepared with love. The spices were incredible. We also had Baka Stoba (beef stew), Gabrito (goat), Galina Stoba (chicken stew), fries, white rice, local rice and beans and tutu and pumpkin fungi. Tutu is a bean type polenta that is sweet and filling.  I sampled the fish and chicken and the sides. It was a delicious meal.

Even during the heat of the day, it is cool and relaxing at Rose Inn. Rose Inn is closed on Wed. each week.  After your meal, I recommend a stop at the local museum or Lourdes Grotto. Climb to the top and you have amazing views of Rincon. This is also a popular bird watching spot. The first Sat. of the month Rincon hosts an open air market with crafts and local food and music.  Maria from Soldachi Tours can also organize a highly recommend walking tour of Rincon and the surrounding areas. Contact Maria at wilmari@bonairelive.com.

Spotlight Restaurant Mi Banana

June 1, 2009

Mi Banana

Locals and tourists in the know make it a point to stop at Mi Banana on Nikkiboko Nord for fresh fish and homemade Columbian style desserts. This small low key hole in the wall is not fancy in appearance but the quality of food is superb. A group of 8 of us recently dined on fresh fish. My friend Larry snapped a photo above of his delicious locally caught red snapper. Most of us had Dradu/Mahi Mahi and one had farm raised conch from Venezuela. Each comes with a side of two starches, fries, boiled yucca, fried yucca or rice. The salad was amazing. There are 2 sauces, pika or homemade pepper sauce and an avocado sauce. Our waiter, Carlos,  the owner’s son offered us several fresh juice selections. I chose passion and mango with some Bacardi to heat it up. Fish is 17 ANG or 10 USD. What a bargain!  The desserts include homemade flan, passion fruit desserts and more. Save room to enjoy one of these delectable treats. It’s a lively bar with workers ending the day waiting for their take out. The setting is friendly and there is plenty of parking on the street.

Heel lekker!!
