The Bonaire Reporter is urging Bonaire residents to water the donkeys and birds. We have not had measurable rain since last fall. As a result the donkeys and birds are dying. It only takes a few minutes and costs a few cents to put out buckets of water for the donkeys and pans of water for the birds. Be kind and save our wildlife.
Word is the St. Paddy’s party is at Paradise Moon in Bonaire. This tex mex hot spot will be pouring the Guinness and Jamieson and making St. Patrick’s Day on Bonaire a night to remember. Hollywood nodded their heads to the controversial documentary, “The Cove” bestowing the Best Documentary award at last nights 82nd Academy Awards. If the dolphins knew they would be singing with joy and leaping in the air. The film is about the controversial annual dolphin hunt held in the Japanese whaling town of Taiji. Directed by Louie Psihoyos, one of the world’s prominent still photographers the film depicts this horrible annual slaughter.

Why is this on a Bonaire Blog? Because our sister island Curacao has a dolphin prison whereas tourist flock to swim with the dolphins…please consider not supporting such programs including Seaquarium, Seaworld and any other mammal prisons. Bonaire takes pride in respecting nature. To know our neighbors have such a program leaves many shocked in disbelief. 30 miles away, lovely dolphins are prisoners.
Hundreds of years ago the donkeys were brought to Bonaire to labour in the sun. Unwilling guests they are still a part of Bonaire’s landscape some wandering free living off the landscape. Many have been captured and are living in harmony at the Donkey Sanctuary. No trip to Bonaire is complete without a visit to the sanctuary for a Donkey Safari. Before you go, head to Cultimara and stock up on about 10 bags of day old bread and apples. You will need it. Consider adopting a donkey.
