Bonefishing on Bonaire

September 24, 2015

Bonefishing on Bonaire: the pursuit or art of capturing and releasing the elusive Warashi. The shallow, gin-clear flats of Bonaire are home to these shiny, iridescent graceful creatures. As a windsurfer, planing on the water, I often see Bonefish gliding under my board. Sometimes, walking in the shallows, they dart around my feet, shyly playing. In Bonaire, they are called Warashi. I have watched many clients Bonefish in Bonaire. One invited me to try it on a sunny windless day. As a person who practices and teaches Mindful Meditation, I can say, Bonefishing is Zen. Quietly, oh so serenely standing in the crystal clear water, posturing your body, making careful, deliberate motions with your crafted rod is mindful. It’s quite peaceful.  i was not successful that day but I was told practice makes perfect.

Bonaire’s Nightlife – Sizzle

September 12, 2015

When I first came to Bonaire, I was not prepared for the lively and often vibrant night scene. There are several hot spots that often feature international and local DJ’s and musicians. Spice Beach Club hosts international acts including a recent visit by Orange Grove from Sint Maarten.  This venue is also my favorite Friday night Happy Hour spot. Karel’s Beach Bar often hosts some hot local and regional DJ’s. Music pumps into the wee hours.  This place is a favorite Coffee Bar by day.

Recently I went to a DJ session at Little Havana. This tiny jazz style bar packs ’em in, thanks to solid DJ’s and music experiences. Prepare to dance and prepare to sweat. Music pumps into the early morning hours most nights. They also feature a cigar bar with Cuban and Dominican smokes. I recommend the Caipirinha.

Other spots that feature a fantastic music scene include Hang Out Bar at Lac Bay. This oceanfront bar and restaurant hosts wild and fun parties around the full moon, each month. Alcohol flows freely and the dance floor is the brown sugar sandy beach. When in the Caribbean, partying on the beach, is everyone’s dream. Hang Out Bar makes it your reality.

Bonaire is one of the Caribbean’s sleepy islands with a central focus being the sea but at night, Bonaire is a jumping hot spot. Find your own fun party spot and enjoy the island vibe.

Osaka- Sushi Bliss on Bonaire

September 1, 2015

If you’ve perused my blog, you notice I love to eat. One of my greatest pleasures when traveling, is the search for the ultimate in dining. On my little island, I am thrilled with the wide varied options of dining spots. One of my go to places when seeking “clean eating” is Osaka. Osaka is nestled up top in a open air dining room on Kaya Grande. The upstairs balcony offers a view of the often lively street scene. Cool breezes create a lovely dining experience. The wait staff are very efficient and professional but this places gets crowed, so sit back, sip some Saki and embrace a slow dining experience.

Osaka offers fresh fish whenever possible. Our server advised us they were serving fresh Tuna and Mahi Mahi as well as Butterfish. The fish did taste lovely. Presentation and plating are creative and artful. I wish the spicy tuna handroll had the traditional mayo Sriracha sauce to heat things up.

If you are craving some sushi, Osaka is your best bet for fresh and tasty sushi. To book at table, contact your island Concierge, Ann Phelan at ann@bonairecaribbean.com
