Windsurf Bliss

The Christmas trade winds arrived in time for the holidays. Marguerite and I have been camped out at Jibe City for the holidays. We have been watching the windsurf scene from our lounge chairs, enjoying the lovely cuisine at Hang out Bar and I have been catching a few solid windsurf sessions. My absolute favorite sail is the 4.7 meter Neil Pryde Wizard. Jibe City has a slew of newly rigged sails and brand new lovely JP boards. They also just received a shipment of Fanatic boards with more volume for the beginner or heavier sailor.

The bay has been rocking with some nice chop in the mornings. By afternoon, things flatten out a bit. Out on the highway, the British Invasion domininates. Leader of the pack, Trevor, clocked up a holiday record of 53.6 km/hr (28.9 knots) recently. The family sails from early in the morning until late in the day. Kontiki – Windsurf Heaven

In 2001 I forged a partnership with Kontiki Resort. After a site inspection and short stay, I knew it was the ideal spot for discerning windsurf clientel. The rustic property is nestled in the Bonaire Kukuku with sweeping views of the vast mangroves. In the distance the windsurf highway can be seen with sailors blasting on the blue sea. The steady trades onshore provide a cooling experience. Since 2001 I have had the privilege of sending hundreds of windsurfers to Kontiki. Managers, Martin and Miriam are ably assisted by Carla to care for my clients needs.

On site is a lovely al fresco restaurant featuring sumptuous local and regional cuisine with some Dutch influences. This is my favorite lunch spot in between sailing sessions. The Dutch Kibbling (fish and chips) and fish soup are my favorites.

Some of Kontiki’s rooms were recently refurbished including Lac Bay Villa, the properties 4 bedroom oceanview escape. Lac Bay Villa is a client favorite featuring a gourmet kitchen and roof top deck for star gazing. I have enjoyed many social visits at this villa including several Stand Up Paddle sessions from the beach (SUP).

Wicked Windsurfing

Our winds are positively amazing this month and last month, and the month before. Today, it was gusting beyond 25 knots at times. The waves rolling into Lac Bay were amazing.

Take a look at Nic Hibdige, GBR 700. He is sponsored by Mystic, Simmer Sails, Starboard and 24-7 Boardsports. He and his super fast slalom sailor brother, Sam take on the waters of Bonaire. Nic is new school freestyle, whilst Sam is old school slalom. Today, Sam was blasting on the blue highway of Lac Bay racing / training with former Olympian, Constanstine “Patun” Saragoza. Sam has clocked 57 KPH in the UK. Today he was rocking his 5.7 TR7 and 86 ltr Isonic.
